Why Not a Tribute to Willie Mays at Citi Field?

The New York Mets decided to honor the great Jackie Robinson by naming Citi Field's rotunda after the former Brooklyn Dodger Hall of Famer. While a noble gesture, what does Jackie Robinson have to do with the Mets or Citi Field?

While the old Brooklyn Dodger blue and the New York Giant orange make up the official colors of the New York Mets today, why honor Robinson when he has no linkage to the history and story of the Metropolitans?

Robinson played in Brooklyn. The Mets play in Queens. Robinson never played a role with the franchise in any capacity.

So why the honor?
