Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain” Defense Continues Under Tomlin, LeBeau

When the Rooney family decided to hire Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin as the successor to Bill Cowher in 2007, they added youth to their coaching staff. At the same time, they hired a coach with the experience to lead a strong team known for their defense.

Tomlin was coming of a season with the Vikings that saw the defense finish first against the run and eighth overall. Before coming to the Vikings, Tomlin spent five years in Tampa Bay as the defensive backs coach.

His most successful season in Tampa Bay was in 2002 when he helped lead the Buccaneers to victory in Super Bowl XXXVII. Against the Raiders, the secondary got four out of the team's five interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns....
