The term "interim head coach" never applied. Interim coaches don't bench first-round draft picks. They aren't established enough to deliver postgame rants. And there's certainly no precedent for dropping trou'. But Mike Singletary chose, or perhaps had no choice but to coach the way he played--menacing, dominant, commanding respect. So far, so good. After taking over for Mike Nolan mid-season, Singletary doused the 49ers grease fire and led San Francisco to a 5-4 finish in 2008, including four wins in the final five weeks.
