Thomas Edison ought to be proud. It was Edison, the inventor, who famously opined, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” Ole Tom would have loved the Red Wings’ series-winning goal Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena.

It was a typical playoff tally—devoid of artistry, full of ugly.

Dan Cleary’s goal with exactly three minutes left in the third period wouldn’t make the highlight reel of a beer league team’s end-of-the-year video.
