The Edmonton Oilers Have Asked to Speak to Tom Renney

The Edmonton Journal is reporting that the Edmonton Oilers have asked permission of the New York Rangers to speak to their former head coach Tom Renney.

Renney was the Rangers head coach since 2004 when he took over for Glen Sather at the end of the season.

The Rangers under his tenure made the playoffs each of the three years since the lock out season.  He was fired at the beginning of 2009 because the Rangers were mired in a bad losing streak and the team was in danger of missing the playoffs.

Renney has been rumored to be in the mix thanks to a relationship he has with Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini.
