Washington Capitals Lead New York Rangers 4-0 Without Avery

Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin both scored in the second period to give the Washington Capitals a 4-0 lead over the New York Rangers, playing Game Five of their first round NHL playoff series without Sean Avery for the first time.

Semin scored five minutes into an otherwise dull second period to give the Capitals a 3-0 lead, and Ovechkin scored a highlight reel goal at the end of the period.

The Rangers scratched Avery for Game Five in the first round playoff series against the Capitals on a night they could end the first round playoff series. He picked up seven penalties in the past two games, including a misconduct.
