It reminds me of my favorite cartoon show, with Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner.
The cartoon characters from Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies followed the laws of cartoon physics and they appear to apply here, too.
For example, the Road Runner has the ability to enter the painted image of a cave, while the Coyote cannot (unless there is an opening through which he can fall).
That describes the ownership issue pretty precisely.
